Applications are now being received at the ranger station for the first week-end fishing dates which will be May 20, 21, and 22—on North Fork of French Broad. Schedule for the season follows: North French Broad river and trib utaries, 40 anglers dally on May 20. 21 and 22: Davidson river and tribu taries, 75 anglers dally on June 3, 4 and 5; North Mills river below res ervoir, 40 anglers each day on June 17, IS and 19: Davidson river and tributaries, 75 anglers dally on July 22, 23 and 24; North French Broad river and tributaries. 40 anglers dally on August 5, « and 7: Davidson river and tributaries, 75 anglers dally on . August 19, 20 and 21. Hospitality Group To Cooperate With State Committee heads were elected at the Initial meeting of the Oovemor’a Hos pitality committee which was held in the Brevard Civic club rooms Tuesday evening. After statement of purposes and alms of the hospitality group by Chair man Pat Klmzey. Mrs. Mary Jane Mc , Crary was elected vice chairman, and ■ Mrs. C. M. Douglas, secretary. * Committee leaders who will serve during the year. In cooperatllon with other members of the county commit tee and the state-wide organization. Include: Mayor A. H. Harris, public officials, camps, hotels and boarding houses; John W. Smith, business and professional men and women: C. M. Douglas, filling station operators; Mrs. Oliver Orr, churches. Sixteen members of the county com mittee were present, for the meeting, and plans were discussed for a county wide drive to make visitors and tour ists feel more welcome while in the county, with especial emphasis to be placed on courtesy as to Information, and providing recreation, for those who spend some time here. " Ranson'a college crew meets Mars HIU here Thursday afternoon at 3 o’ctock on the college field In what promises to be a tight game. They play again Monday with Blue Ridge of fering the opposition. Saturday afternoon the Spinners and Tanners each play visiting teams In Brevard. The Spinners will meet Flat Rock of the Blue Ridge Industrial League, with the game to be played on the high school field. The Tanners will play Beacon of the Western Carolina League on the col lege field. Altogether, those who want to see Just "A” game of baseball, will have plenty of chances to pick from, or If lucky, will manage to squeeze In three out of the four. New Town Hall Will Be Completed In May Plans now call for the Town of Bre yard office to move Into Its new quar ters Just across the street from present location. Workmen are making fine progress on the building, and the offices will be moved as soon as possible. Ample room Is provided In the new structure to take care of the town's needs for years to come, with large storage space In the basement for equipment and supplies. The fire truck will be housed In the i street floor section of the building, ' where will also be found the city clerk office, and very probably the Chamber of Commerce desk. Work Is being done by the WPA. Galloway Cafe Moves Into Modern Quarters Announcement Is being made this week by Galloway’s Cafe of their re moval to new location on Broad street, In the building next to the Dixie store which was formerly occupied by Plum mer’s. The entire building has been gone A over, with a new front put In, new ™ colore of a "fetching” type, and a modern cafe kitchen. The new place affords more room, and Is considered by those who have seen It as a decided asset to the town. East Fork Service* A special service will be held at the Bast Fork Baptist church Sunday af ternoon at 3 o’clock. It has been an nounced. The Rev. Nathan Chapman will preach the sermon on this oc casion. GARDEN CLUB SHOW SLATED FOR FRIDAY « Spring Flower* Will Be Ex hibited—Formal Array Be Feature of Event The Brevard Garden club has com pleted plans for a spring flower show to be held at the NTA hut Friday af temooon and evening from 2 to 8:80 o’clock. The show will be divided Into five sections—artistic arrangement, speci men, special arrangement, a natur al garden and a formal garden. Occupying the stage In the center of the building will be the formal garden. After the manner of the gar dens of colonial Williamsburg, this one will be of formal design and largely green. The design will be outlined with box edging and have the tradi tional sand walks. Special arrangement section will In (Continued on tack pape) County Soil Survey Soon Be Available P. O. Perkins, of the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture, and William Get tys, of the Noith Carolina agriculture experiment department, cooperating with the Tennessee Valley Authority, have Jus', -nmp’eted the final work of the survey 0- Transylvania county. The report will be written later, after the surveyors have moved to another area on rainy days. The purpose of this survey Is bene ficial r.ot only to the farmers but to all citizens In Transylvania and all of Western North Carolina. The objec tive of the soil survey project In this county is primarily to classify, man and describe the soils In such detail and manner as to be of the greatest pos sible use In problems of soil manage ment and conservation, proper land use and agricultural development. A report Is written and the soil map la folded and pasted In the back of the report and delineated on the map In different colors and Indexed on the side of the map. Any one can look In the report and find the description of every soil shown on the map. The outline of the report consists of: Description of the county; cllmatalog Ical data from earliest data down to the present: agricultural history of the county, beginning with the agriculture of the earliest settlers right on up to the present; chapter on soils and crops, a detailed description of each Boil type and phase; agricultural methods and managements; genesis and morphology; summary. Cle&n-Up Week Here Wa® Very Succe*®ful Annual clean-up week which was ob served In Brevard last week had the best response of any Bltnllar event In years, according to Mrs. O. 1>. Erwin chairman. The town truck was kept busy dur ing the entire week, hauling rubblBh and trash, and In addition, a number of residents hired conveyances for haul ing. Along with the clean-up work, a number of yards and lawnB have been beautified and freshly painted build ings are also very much In evidence. One of the outstanding features of the afternoon will be the "homecom ing” of all the children born In this hospital. All the parents are urged to come and bring the babies that were born there. There are few organizations In our locality which are so valuable as our community hospital, and It Ib felt that the majority of the citizens of our town and county are only too glad to have the opportunity to show appre ciation of the good work rendered by It. The hospital has achieved an enviable record, and has recently been Improv ed In several ways. The efficient and courteous corps of nurses will be happy to supply Information concerning the hospital and to show the guests of the afternoon around. Brevard On Eligible. List for Postoffice Brevard Is on the eligible list to have a poBtofflce building built by the fed eral government, according to advice from Washington on Saturday. Under the building program which was up for hearing on Saturday, 23 tcwnB In the state are on the eligible list, with Black Mountain, Murphy, Spruce Pine. Swannanoa. and Valdese also In the list. Estimated cost of the North Carolina buildings, under the bill, range from $75,000 to $36,000. W.O.W. Plans Team For Softball Loop At their Monday night meeting the Brevard Woodmen voted to have a soft ball team to enter In the city league which Is expected to be formed soon. The camp agreed to appropriate money to pay for necessary equipment and elected Harry Stroud as manager of the team. Manager Stroud said that he would make definite announcement concerning practice next Monday night at the meeting. The team should be reasonably strong as there are five members o< last year’s Baptist championship team who are members of the lodge. They are Harry Stroud, Ralph Brown, Roy McCall, Vance Jackson, and Nathan McMInn. Others who have had ex perience and expressed Interest are Robert Tinsley, Robert Jackson, James Walden, Dean Whitlock, E. R. HaycB Edgar Garren, Joe Hamlin, J. I* Tins ley, Pat Poor, Richard Enloe, and John Plckleslmer. Finds Freak Egg An egg that had apparently been cut In half and cemented back togethei by the hen was brought to The Times office last week by W. O. Tinsley. When pulled apart the large two-ln-one egg contained two yolks. Offices of the Transylvania Trust company were used by the attorneys and officials of the company In maktng the transfers, with Walter M. Schwars, vice president of the Ecusta Corpora tion, Issuing the checks. Work of recording the large batch of deeds has already been started in the office of Register of Deeds Eck Sims. The property transfers Include a boundary of land on both sides of Davidson River from the Plsgah No tional Forest line, east to the Carr Lumber lands, with riparian rights on Davidson River to Its mouth. Southern Railway engineers have completed surveys for the Bide tracks which will be built through the Carr Lumber company property, across the W. D. Deaver land, and to the building site. _ The company made official an nouncement hurt ’week that the plant would he put Into operation during the early part of 19*9, and that local people would be employed In the plant. Business leaders of the county are happy over the fact that the huge plant Is to be located In Transylvania, and newspapers over the entire south and eeat have carried articles dealing with the new concern which will produce cigarette papers of the finest type, and will be the most modern plant any where. Associated In the Ecusta Paper Cor poration are Interests connected with the French manufacturers of fine cigarette paper which ha* been Import ed for years to America, and the plant will, from the beginning of Its opera tion be able to duplicate the. excellent French cigarette paper which has be come so popular In America. Official announcement as to begin ning of building operations will be made by the company officials as soon as plans are ready to be made public. Business Property In Uptown Area Painted Added to the list of newly pelntcd store fronts In Brevard are those of the Central Market, Buy-Rite, the Smith Furniture store which will open Boon, Long’s Drug store, Ruth’s Beauty Par lor which also frilled up with Venetian blinds, and the telephone central of fice. Macfie Drug store le making a new place out of their store on the square, with a new front going In. a new streamline fountain, and more room being added to their display space. Simpson Barber shop Is using paper and paint to make their place tidy, and front of the Sample Store Is fresh, as well as the postoffice front, the highway office, and Western Union. Several other business houses are also planning to add new paper, paint, and new equipment, and In general the uptown area now has the beet ap pearance It has had In years. South Carolina Press To Meet Two Days Caesar's Head Hotel Newspaper publishers from all parts of South Carolina will get a taste of the mountain breezes at their annual association which Is to be held at Caesar’s Head on June 9 and 10. The two-day session, which will be under auspices of the Dreenvlile Cham ber of Commerce, Is expected to draw several hundred people. The North Carolina Press Associa tion will meet this year at Blowing Rock. Invitation of Hendersonville was outvoted at the executive meeting held In Morganton last Saturday. Miss Kathryn Rpratt, of Marion, Is stopping at the Plerce-Moore hotel. She Ib connected with the new Smith Furniture company store In Brevard. Colored Ball Game The Asheville Black Tourist baseball team will play the Brevard Sluggers on the high school field here Friday afternoon at 8:80 o’clock. On the local team, Walter Smith will be pitcher, and Shorty Whitmire catcher. Spring Fe»tiv*J At College Wat Success Brevard College’s annual spring fes tival, celebrated on the college campus Saturday, was a notable success, at tended by hundreds of the student body, faculty, townspeople and out of town visitors. The day’s activities Included exhibits of the various departments In the ad ministration building and on the cam pus: a baseball game on the college athletic field between the college team and Blue Kldge, resulting In victory for the local boys; spring festival cere monies on the West Hall lawn and crowning of the festival queen, follow ed by various festival dances. Supper was served on the lawn of West Hall to the college body and visitors. The day’s program concluded with the presentation of five one-act orig inal plays written by members of the creative writing cIrss of Miss Mar jorie Craig. These plays, presented by different students, were under the gen eral direction of Miss T.uclle Smith, of the dramatic department, and were enthusiastically received, as attested by the hearty laughter and frequent ap plause from the large audience. Dr. Stokes Mores Office Dr. R. L. Stokes has moved his of fices from the Scott Grocery building to the Plummer Department store build ing. The offices are on the second floor. To Open Furniture Store W. R. Smith of Marion and Brevard Is planning to open a furntture store here within a few days. Announcement will be made In The Times next week. Rosman Will Have Special Plane Mail ROSMAN, May 11—"Come Visit Beautiful Sylvan Valley" Is the very appropriate slogan on special Rosman air mall envelopes which will be car ried by plane from this poBt office on May 19. The special cachet was made up at the request of Postmaster L. V. Sig mon, who Is chairman of the Transyl vania county air Mall Week, and let ters bearing the Rosman, North Car olina Imprint on Its face will be mailed to all parts of the country during Air Mall Week, May 16-21. A mall plane will pick up the spec ial Rosman air mall from the Rosman airport owned by Dr. J. E. Osborne at 1:16 on May 19, and flown from there to the Hendersonville airport, and from there to Salisbury, where connections will be made with planes to other deetl nations. The special plane will be a model J6 Travelalr with Pilot Floyd Brown at the controls. During the entire week air mall bearing the special Rosman stamp on Its face will be routed by Greenville and Spartanburg, with only the one day special plane service to the Rosman airport. A large supply of the special Ros. man envelopes have been secured by Postmaster Sigmon, and he stated this week that many people were planning to use the slx-cent air mall Instead of the regular postage In order to ad vertise Rosman and the Sylvan Valley. It Is expected that a number of people will meet the special plane when It lands on the Rosman field be longing to Dr. Joe E. Osborne. Mayor A. M. White and the board of aider men and Dr. Osborne have been in vited to attend by Postmaster Sigmon, as well as civic loaders from Brevard, who will accompany Postmaster Cole man Galloway when he brings the Bre vard air mail to the landing field. The special air mall window at Hoe man will close here at 12:45, and all letters mailed on the 19th, up to that time will be sent via the special plane. Postofflces throughout the nation are co-operating In National Air Mall Week, with many of the surrounding towns having special cachets made for use during the seven days. Wade C. Hill of Canton Is chairman of the eleventh district to work with the postmasters. High school students are competing In an essay contest on "Wings Across America" dealing with the Ideas, purpose, and advantages of air transportation as It affects mod ern communication. Brevard To Join In Air Mail Week Plan Brevard will join In the National Air Mail ween uiovbiuiuv, wuu ruiv master Coleman Galloway taking mall on the 10th to the special plane which Is landing on the Roetnan field at 1:15 on Thursday of next week. Special commemorative stamps have been secured at the local post office for use during air mail week, and these will be available all week, with special mailing of all requested on the Ros man plane on Thursday. The special mall plane will arrive at 1:16, and all letters for the trip must be In the local postofflce not later than 12:00 noon. A number of people In Brevard have been Invited by Postmaster L. V. Sig mon at Rosman to meet the special plane at the Dr. Osborne field near Cherryfleld, and it is expected that a large crowd will be gathered there for the occasion of the first actual mall plans pickup In this county. STATE RECREATION GROUP MIS HERE Worker* From Many Section* Will Hold Week’* Sa**ion at Camp Sapphire Plena ere practically completed for entertainment In Brevard of the etat* recreation training conference of the WPA, which will be held at Camp Sap phire In a four-day eeeelon, beginning Monday morning. MIbb Ronle Sheffield, state director of recreation, will preside. Speakers of note from national and state headquarters will appear on the four days’ program. Included among the leaders will be Miss Rings, of Washington. D. C., assistant to the na tional recreation adviser, who will con duct open forums on various phases of the work, and dlscusatons by Mr. Bent ley, regional supervisor of education and recreation, on varied topics per taining to the project. The conference Ib for the purpose of g study, training, recreation, nature study and other phases dealing with recrea tional program leadership. Adult Education Group To Have Display Here An exhibit and reception will be giv en by the local adult education of tho WPA setup Saturday afternoon from 2 to 6 o’clock in the NYA hut on the high school grounds. It has been an nounced by Mrs. Allle Wilson, super visor. The public Is Invited. An exhibition of work done by stu. dents of the local adult education group will he Included In the annual exhibit to be held In Asheville on Thursday of this week at McCormick field, la connection with the observance of adult education week. It Is expected that 260 students of the Tranejuvanla county adult educa tion will go to Asheville on Thursday to enjoy the all-day program and to take In some of the sights and Inter ests to be seen there. Mrs. Wilson, who has been attending the various celebrations In Asheville this week, will accompany the students on Thursday. Around 6,000 adult students from 14 Western North Carolina counties en rolled In WPA and state-aided classca will participate In the observance of Adult Education week In AeheviUe. It is expected that the Thursday event! will attract approximately *,600 stu dent* from Western Carolina counties. makimTprogress ON PISCAH HIGHWAY Construction Work Is Going Forward In Haywood County Alio Work Is progressing satisfactorily on highway 2*4, with the crews under Chandler Brothers working on th* lower stretch and those of C. A. Rag land on the upper stretch. Work Is also being done on the Hay wood side of the mountain, with a view to the road being completed to Wagon Road gap on either side. The Springdale bridge on the Hay wood stretch was started last week, and bids are soon to be let on a four and one-half mite lap In that connty. It is expected that the Transylvania projects will be completed before fall. Camp Cateeche Will Open Session June 11 Camp Cateeche, a summer camp for Girl Scouts, will open In Brevard June 11 and continue In session through August t. The camp term will be divided Into four two-week periods. Miss Dorothy Donnell, of Charlotte, la director of the camp, which will b» held for the Asheville, Charlotte and Greenville, S. C. Girl Scout organisa tions. A capable staff of trained lead ers and counselors will assist In tha - various camp activities, which Include • training In Girl Scout operations, na ture study, folk dancing, archery, ten nis, crafts and various aquatic sporta: afforded by the camp lake. Miss Donnell will be assisted on the camp staff by around 10 counselors and assistants In the various depart ments of operation. Camp Cateeche Is located on the for mer Camp Perry Ann site, In the Glen Cannon falls section. Art School Will Be Conducted By Oliver A summer art school will open tn> Brevard Monday, May 16, and continue In session until Saturday, August IT,. It has been announced by William Henry Oliver, Instructor. Classes will be In operation for high school, grammar and primary stu dents, and all will be held In a room In the grammar school building. The classes for high school students wU! be held each Thursday morning from 10 to II o’clock. Other schedules win be arranged later. Mr. Oliver has stated that he will be at the grammar sohool building Mon day morning at • o’clock to talk with parents and prospective students and arrange ctaru schedules.
